Kasich Signs Order Opening Ohio Public Roads to Smart Vehicle Testing

Ohio Governor John Kasich signed an executive order Wednesday authorizing autonomous vehicle research and testing on public roads.

The order permits autonomous vehicle testing on any public road, but requires participating vehicles to meet certain safety requirements and comply with all current state traffic laws.  Furthermore, this order requires operators to have a valid license and the ability to take control of the vehicle, if necessary.

The order also urges participating projects to sign up with the state’s DriveOhio initiative, a newly-created state office aiming to drive an increase in autonomous technology development.
